MIXED FORTUNES FOR OUR DIV 3 TEAMS WITH ENDURANCE FINISHING 12TH AND FURIOUS 5TH. SUPERB PERFORMANCES FROM BOTH HECTOR AND INVINCIBLE WHO FINISHED 1ST AND 2ND IN DIV 4. GANNET WERE NOT FAR BEHIND IN 6TH PLACE AND THE JAVELING JUNIORS GAINED SOME USEFUL EXPERIENCE EVEN THOUGH THEY FINISHED AT THE FOOT OF THE TABLE.
FOR FULL DETAILS, LOG ON TO HTTP://WWW.MTTTL.CO.UK Report: Final of the 41st Charles Stampe Trophy Competition Our superb young Cumberland team battled out the final of the Charles Stampe Trophy Competition against Premier side Surdee 5. Sturdee, whose second team won competition last season were on target to retain the trophy but Cumberland's youngsters Shaun Gutridge, Sean Weddell and Alex Cochrane already winners of the second division were determined to lift the trophy for Chatham. In the opening game Spencer Thompson held Gutridge 13-31 but in the second leg Thompson was matched by Gutridge for a 30-31 score to give total points of 67-62 to Cumberland on handicap. Weddell mastered Steve Bannister's service to lead most of the way in the first leg but eventually lost out 27-31; Bannister was more frugal in the second for a total handicap score of 61-62 to give Cumberland a four-point lead. Kevin Dinnes overcame a handicap of 28 points a game to beat Cochrane 49-62. Weddell clawed back 4 points at Thompson's expense but Dinnes again came to the rescue beating Gutridge 53-62 to give the premier outfit a 14-point lead. Although Bannister had to give Cochrane 34-points over the two legs, he held him to a 55-62 score-line while Dinnes increased the winning margin beating Weddell 48-62. Thompson lost out to Cochrane 64-62 and Gutridge beat Bannister 65-69, winning the final leg 31-28 but the comeback was insufficient and too late as Sturdee won by a 27-point margin Mrs Joan Stampe presented the trophies with daughters Cheryl and Diane in attendance.
